The Mira Costa Drama Department hosted its ninth-annual benefit show for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome on Feb. 7 in the small theatre and raised a total of $600 toward nonprofit organization Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
During the benefit show, students in the Drama Department presented self-produced performances, showcasing comedic and dramatic scenes, songs, dances and monologues.

“[The benefit] really gives students a chance to display their talents in a way they might not normally get to,” Benefit organizer and Costa senior Connor Tree said.
The department requested a $5 donation from each attendee at the door to go toward the nonprofit.
Each student performing in the benefit wore black, red, and white. The color choices were representative of the red ribbon, which is the symbol of AIDS, Costa drama teacher Carol Mathews said.
“The best part of the benefit is the fact that we get to help other people,” Tree said. “By letting kids express what they like to do, we can help [children affected by AIDS] have a dream.”
The department held auditions on Feb. 1 for all interested in performing in the show. Students had to prepare acts and present them to a student committee responsible for reviewing the auditions and selecting the acts for the benefit. The event is student-run, Mathews said.

“[The student committee can] see, just in a minute way, what it takes to put on a one-night show,” Mathews said. “It’s a great experience and a good challenge for them.”
