Local beach company Spyder Surfboards hosted it’s annual Surf Fest in Hermosa Beach on April 29, 2017. It was a hot and sunny day in the South Bay and the ocean carried waves that attracted many surfers to the cool water.
At the beginning of Pier Plaza, surf brand Hippytree set up a giant teepee. It was a great attraction to start the festival out with and people went to sit inside and take pictures with throughout the day.
Sector 9 set up their tent with lots of free merchandise that people could win. To win a shirt or hat, kids and adults had to flip a water bottle a certain amount of times on a table, which proved to be difficult for most.
The sun shone nice and bright, giving natural colors to the palm trees and making it seem like it was summer again. The sky was a friendly blue and the heat was welcoming to the gloom that had been taking over the south bay.
Many different surfing companies set up their tents and booths along the plaza which brought tons of people to the pier. The plaza quickly became crowded with young teens and parents all waiting to try and get free merchandise.
RVCA didn’t fail to disappoint with all their clothes and hats. To win, people had to spin a wheel which had tons of choices on it. It was pretty easy to win clothes and hats, and if a person didn’t get anything the first time, they could do it again.
Every festival needs a dunk tank. Just outside of Spyder’s pier shop, a dunk tank was set up where kids could throw a ball at a target in hopes of making one unlucky man drop into the water below for everyone’s entertainment.
Spyder Surfboards has their own store on the pier. Their business was very successful and many people went to shop inside, as they had many sale racks and great summer deals for all the people.
At the end of the plaza, a stage was set up. Throughout the day, local musical artists and bands from Hermosa played their songs as they gathered a crowd and added that special hometown feel the the surf fest.
Sophomore Cole Ficklin spreads his arms in happiness as he takes in the sun and all his surroundings. The surf fest was perfect and carried all the right beach vibes which were passed right into the people who went.
