The Hermosa Beach Police Department and the American Red Cross co-hosted the annual Battle of the Badges Blood Drive on Jan. 9 at the Hermosa Beach City Hall.
The event attracted 31 donors, collectively giving 35 units of blood, which are used to meet the demand for blood in hospitals. Each pint of blood can save up to three lives.
“The largest and most important benefit of this event is knowing that your donation will be used to help cancer patients, trauma patients and patients with chronic disease and has the potential to save lives,” HBPD Lieutenant Landon Phillips said.
Multiple police departments in the area partnered with the Red Cross to participate in this competition during National Blood Donor month. The purpose of this event was to see which department can collect the most blood donations. This was the ninth year that Hermosa’s police department hosted this event.
“The folks at the Red Cross deserve all of the credit for their hard work and we are just happy to find them donors,” Phillips said. “By hosting the blood drive at our City Council chambers, it may be more convenient for some people to donate if they do not live close to a donation center.”
