Junior Reach and teammates named top player by Daily Breeze

Junior linebacker Jackie Reach was named the Daily Breeze Top Linebacker to Watch in 2024. He had an impressive sophomore season, leading the Mustangs with 114 tackles, three sacks and seven pass break-ups. Reach began his varsity career for the Mustangs as a freshman, focusing on his communication. According to Reach, he attributes his success to being a vocal leader and an emphasis on relaying information to his teammates.

“A strong suit of mine is my communication,” Reach said. “I take pride in it as it helps the other defenders around me, allowing us to succeed”

Reach is setting his sights even higher for this upcoming 2024 season. He aims to improve in all aspects of his game. To accomplish this goal, Reach spent a lot of time on his craft to make this possible through offseason training during the spring and summer.

“A few goals I have for the year are 120 plus tackles and seven-plus sacks,” Reach said. “As a team, we want to allow less than 21 points per game and continue to get the ball into the offense’s hands.”

Reach’s journey has been one steady progress. His leadership qualities have blossomed, and he’s earned the respect of his teammates. According to junior safety, Ethan Hunt, his leadership motivates the team during practice and games. “Jackie is a great player but also a great teammate,” Hunt said. “He is a leader on the team and always gets our spirits up before every game and during practice.”

According to Cassius D Pierce Jr., the assistant coach for the Mustangs, Reach steps in as the enforcer, a hard hitter, and he fills the job very well. According to Coach Pierce Jr., Junior Reach and teammates named top players by Daily Breeze Reach is able to have a historic season at Costa with his new role in the defense as he is able to make even more plays than last year.

“Jackie is in a new position that allows him to be more physical and to make more big plays,” Coach Pierce Jr. said. “Being a three year starter always has its advantages.”

As the Mustangs prepare for the 2024-25 season, Reach is determined to lead his team to new heights. According to Reach, he has his eyes on a state championship. He knows that his work on and off the field will be crucial to his success.

“I want to leave my mark on this program,” Reach said. “This team means everything to me, and I’m going to give it everything I have to achieve our goals.”

As well as Reach, two of his teammates Brady Nuthall, junior defensive lineman, and Luke Meeker, junior wide receiver received similar honors from the Daily Breeze. According to Nuthall, he is extremely grateful for this honor.

“It means a lot to me because of everything I had to donto gain this spot,” Nuthall said.“In the off season we had to get up at 5:30 every morning for lifts, which helped me to improve and build discipline.”
