Girls varsity volleyball defeated Palos Verdes High School in a Bay League match at home on September 19th. The Mustangs beat the Sea Kings 3-0 in a match improving their record to 11-3.

“It was really fun, especially winning in three sets,” outside hitter junior Audrey Flanagan said. “They were a great tand impressive team and we have been preparing for this matchup for a while so getting a win feels great.”

The first set began with Costa coming out the gate defeating the Sea Kings in the opening set, 25-17. The team continued to push hard, and continued to build on the first set. They started the game passing well leading to open opportunities hitting.

“We started off really strong, we served well and killed the ball effectively,” according to junior setter Milly McGee. “We talked as a team after that set and we were all super satisfied. ”

The second set got out to a great start for the Mustangs from the help of Junior Audrey Flanagan offensive efforts. After a strong start in the first the Sea Kings were not able to catch up trailing in the second 25-12, and third 25-19.

“We have to trust and rely on each other when the games get intense,” junior Cayenne Ceman said. “Warming up and having good energy through the game led to our early successes.”

The Mustang prepares to enter a tough tournmanet this weekend in Las Vegas. The Durango Classic is home to some of the best teams in the nation. The Mustangs hope to continue their winning streak into the tournament.

“We have put a large epthais on practicing hard so it translates to games,” Junior Simone Roslon said. “Specifically, we focus on touching every ball to increase our chances of scoring.”

The team continues to build off the success from last season, coming in 2nd in The CIF Playoffs, and finishing top three in the nation. According to Taylor Deckert, the team wasn’t satisfied with the result last season and set the bar even higher this year.

“We bring the energy in practice to refining every skill needed,” Deckert said. “We want to build our perseverance in each game, and to be able to win those close games.”
