On Tuesday Oct 22, girls flag football had their first CIF game of the season. This is the first time that the girls flag football has had CIF playoffs in the sports history. The Mustangs faced St. Mary’s Academy at home, and defeated the Belles 24-0.

The game saw the Mustangs taking an early lead, with senior wide receiver Kit Humbarger scoring he first touchdown. According to senior linebacker Stella Traylor, this early lead led to the Mustangs gaining lots of energy, which ultimately helped them keep their momentum for the rest of the game.

“At the very start of the game, our energy was very low,” Traylor said. “But after that first touchdown, we realized that we could actually beat this team, even though they were ranked higher than us.”

Shortly after their first touchdown, freshman wide receiver Anna Brown scored the Mustangs second touchdown. This put the Mustangs at a 12-0 lead after missing the extra point plays. According to junior quarterback Caroline Love, the Mustangs were able to score these touchdowns with ease because of the team’s ability to run the practiced routes.

“I think that everyone did a great job getting open,” Love said. “Getting in a spot where they were able to catch the ball was really beneficial.”

Heading into the second half, the Mustangs still held their 12-0 lead. According to Traylor, Costa’s strong defense kept the Belles from scoring a touchdown. It was during this half that Love passed the ball to sophomore Emmy Terry, who ran from the 35 yard line all the way to the end zone, making the score 18-0.

“That was definitely the highlight of the game,” Love said. “I was so proud of both me and Emmy.”

In the last two minutes of the game, senior running back Maddy Osterkamp ran 55 yards, scoring a final touchdown for the Mustangs. This led to a final score of 24-0. Today, the Mustangs will travel to Northwood High School for the second round of playoffs.

“I am so proud of the team for doing so well,” Love said. “To prepare for the next game we are planning to look at film, see what worked, and just continue to do our thing.”
