Costa Baseball fell to South Torrance High School on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The Mustangs only held the Spartans to one run but were unable to put a run on the board and ended up losing 0-1. With this loss, Costa falls to 2-2 to start their season off.

“Giving up only one run is a huge success because it means the pitcher did his job and the defense backed him up,” senior pitcher Dylan Sawin said. “You have to score runs to win, so one run is not a lot to overcome.”

Costa’s defense was very sharp throughout the entire game, only letting up three hits. However, a single homerun was the only play needed for the Spartans to win the game. The Mustang offense was nonexistent, struggling to get anything going against South’s tough defense. According to Sawin, preventing strikeouts will lead to success in the batter’s box.

“We can get the offense going by continuing to build off of our pitchers’ success and carry that momentum into our at bats,” Sawin said. “Jumping on the pitcher early in counts and avoiding strikeouts will make life much harder on the opposing team.”

Costa looks to get back in the win column as they face Long Beach Poly High School on Thursday, Feb. 27. The scores were not recorded before print. According to Sawin, the team has put in a lot of effort throughout the offseason and he believes that they will win games if they trust in one another.

“We have put in a lot of work the past 5 months,” Sawin said. “To start winning, I think it is more about staying relaxed, having each other’s backs, and maintaining an even keel.”
