Costa cheer placed second in California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern California Championships on Feb. 19. The competition took place at Downey High School.
“CIF was a great experience, especially because it was the first year that cheer was a CIF sport,” sophomore side base Ellie Penczar said. “This was the team’s last event before the season ends, and everyone left everything on the mat.”
According to Penczar, the team’s main weakness this year has been the bond between its teammates. The team’s goal going into the CIF competition was to place in the top three.
“I feel like our bond was stronger after nationals because of all the time we spent together, and after finally performing what we have spent months preparing for,” Penczar said. “My personal favorite part of the competition was the awards [when] the whole team clumped together all hoping we would place.”
