Costa hosted the annual alumni volleyball game, where the boys varsity team won 3-0 against the alumni on Feb. 6. The Mustangs won all three sets with scores of 27-25, 25-21, and 25-20.
“Playing against the alumni was a great experience,” junior libero Justin Warner said. It was fun competing with them, especially getting to play against one of our coaches. It was also a good test for our team.”
The alumni team fought hard in the first set, with both teams neck and neck for the lead. Ultimately the boys’ varsity team held their ground winning 27-25.
“Mira Costa is well known for volleyball and having a lot of volleyball talent, so being able to play against some Division 1 college graduate players, and some who went pro and played on the national team is an awesome experience and kept us on our toes,” senior setter Andrew Chapin said.
According to the players, the alumni game brought a lively atmosphere to the Costa gym, with a large crowd of students, parents, and past players filling the stands to cheer on both teams. The energy in the gym was high, and the cheers and chants echoed throughout the match.
“The atmosphere was exciting with all of the friends and family that showed up to celebrate the start of the season,” junior outside hitter Colby Graham said.
The game wasn’t just about the actual competition, but also showed Costa’s volleyball’s lasting bonds between past and present players. The alumni, many of whom had played on the varsity team in previous years, took the opportunity to reconnect with old teammates and relive their glory days.
“It was really cool to play against people that I had met before like some old coaches and friends of my parents,” Graham said.
The alumni game gave the Mustangs a chance to build momentum and set the tone for the upcoming season.
“I’m really excited for this upcoming season. We’ve been working super hard, and I think we have a strong team this year.” Warner said.
