The Mira Costa Drama Department performed its first longform improv show, “Tonight’s Play,” on Friday and Saturday in Costa’s small theater.
Audience members suggested settings and scenarios that the cast incorporated into the performances. In the first part of the performance, actors improvised dialogue to tell a story, following a typical play format. After the intermission, actors performed in a musical format, creating songs on the spot based on prompts by Cathy Shambley-Baer, the show’s director.
“Before this year I haven’t really been in improv all that much,” senior and cast member Isabel Gray said. “[The improv show was] kind of like throw them in the water and hope they swim.”
