Fights breakout in Costa restrooms

The recent uprisings in student altercations on campus have been raising concerns about school safety for students, parents, faculty and staff.

According to students, physical fights have become increasingly frequent during office hours and passing periods. Oftentimes these disputes are recorded, posted, and spread around on social media. In one clip, students can be heard yelling profanity and encouraging the fight, and show a student being repeatedly struck with a water bottle.

“I feel like I hear about fights happening almost every week now,” said sophomore Olivia Dohner. “There’s almost always videos of them posted on Snapchat too, so they get spread around pretty fast.”

Two recent fights which took place in the history building bathroom and cafeteria, have sparked debate as to whether further safety measures should be taken into consideration to prevent this from reoccurring in the future. In the past, schools have enforced sign-in sheets for students using the restroom , and organized anti-violence assemblies.

“I remember in MBMS we had to sign in and out of class whenever we went to use the bathroom and list the time. Teachers could keep track of who was in the bathroom and when.” said Dohner. “They also held a few anti-hate events, like assemblies.”

Mira Costa’s principal, Dr. Huynh, sent out an email to all of Mira Costa’s staff regarding the incident, and ensuring that student safety is always a priority. Students are always encouraged to report concerns and violence, reach out for support if they feel unsafe, or speak to a trusted staff member or adult.

“Recent fights have raised concerns about school safety,” said special education teacher Mrs. Lin. “An email was sent out regarding the incident, and I know that school staff are actively addressing the situation to ensure everyone’s safety.”
