The Hermosa Beach Police Department hosted a blood drive in the council room of the Hermosa Beach City Hall on Jan 12.
The area was transformed into a lab for the drive. The drive was held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and all donations will go to the Red Cross. After blood is taken, it is separated into red cells and plasma. The blood is then tested for a variety of viruses and diseases, according to Red Cross team supervisor Robin Valentine. Once the blood has passed all the tests, it is stored and ready to be used.
“Giving blood requires a very thorough process to ensure that the blood is safe for those who will receive it,” said Valentine.
