The Mira Costa Marching Band and Color Guard competed in the Marching Band Open Series Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada on Nov. 10 and placed second in the Onyx level and sixth overall in the finals.
In this competition, the Marching Band and Color Guard made changes in the end choreography after their last performance at Warren High School. MBOS was founded in 2006 under the Winter Guard Association of Southern California, America’s mostly highly acclaimed winter guard circuit. Competing in this circuit is new for the Mira Costa Marching Band and Color Guard.
“The competition went really well,” Band Co-Drum Major and senior Bella Arnao said. “In my opinion, the run was one of the best we’ve ever had, and I’m really happy with our score.”
The Marching Band and Color Guard performed their four movement piece, “The Pack,” for the second time in its entirety during a competition. The movements incorporate wolf themed songs; “She Wolf” by Sia and David Guetta, “Hungry Like The Wolf” by Duran Duran and “Peter and The Wolf” by Sergei Prokofiev.
“The show was absolutely amazing,” senior Co-President of Color Guard Sara Solis said. “It works a little bit different in this circuit; we perform at prelims and then at finals. Overall, we had such an amazing time and you could feel the energy on the field.”
Mira Costa earned a score of 83.65 in the finals, landing them sixth place out of the 12 finalists. This is an improvement from their score of 79.25 earned at their last competition on Oct. 27 at Warren High School. They earned a rating of superior and earned an additional High Caption Award for High Music Ensemble in the Onyx level.
“This competition was a really memorable one,” band member Summer Syed said. “I got to spend time with all of my friends and overall it was a great experience.”
Following their second and sixth place finishes in Las Vegas, the Costa Marching Band and Color Guard wrapped up their season with a Homecoming Concert yesterday. Winterguard will start rehersal camp in early December leading into their competition season.
“For some of us, it was our last time performing, and that came through in everyone’s performance.” Solis said. “We could not have done it without Mr. Carlson, our coaches, as well as all of the parent chaperones that came to support us. It was great bang to end a wonderful season.”
