Jackson Zawacki was named 2022-23 Student of the Year on May 31. Zawacki is president of the SoLa Surfs Club, Co-President of the Friendship Club, a member of Link Crew and Cybersecurity Club, and a varsity baseball player. Outside of Costa, Zawacki enjoys surfing, going to the beach, hanging out with friends, playing sports, and watching YouTube and TV.
“I am absolutely honored to receive this nomination and grateful to the teachers and faculty who nominated me,” said Zawacki. “If I’m honest, I’m also a little surprised.”
One of Zawacki’s main accomplishments is his work with the Friendship Foundation. This year marks Zawacki’s third as president of Costa’s Friendship Club. He has been a crucial volunteer for the annual Skechers Pier to Pier Walk, raising over $10,000 while leading the Friendship Club teams. With his brother, he created the Costa Caravan community gift deliveries, which will continue even after he graduates. He also received the Friendship Foundation’s 2022 Congressional Certificate of Recognition for Community Impact.
“My biggest accomplishment in high school is the work I’ve done with the Friendship Club and the Friendship Foundation,” said Zawacki. “My aunt is an autistic adult, and growing up, I met many of her neurodiverse friends and learned to embrace others.”
According to Zawacki, Mr. Zeoli, Mrs. Cook, Ms. Weber, Ms. Martinez, and Mrs. Nielsen have helped him grow as a student. He especially recognizes each of his Spanish teachers, who have all influenced him to enjoy learning the culture and language. Zawacki plans to continue his studies at the University of Michigan with a minor in Spanish.
“The faculty and staff at Mira Costa are phenomenal, as well as the baseball coaches, who have mentored me through the years,” said Zawacki. “I am also lucky to have phenomenal friends and family who support me no matter what I’m trying to accomplish, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their continued help.”
