Starring SZA and Keke Palmer, a new heartfelt, vibrant comedy was released on Jan. 17: One of Them Days. The film follows the plot of a hard working waitress named Dreux, played by Keke Palmer, and a carefree artist named Alyssa, played by SZA, a famous singer/songwriter making her debut in acting.

The two broke girls are down on their luck and must scrape together enough money to try and avoid being evicted, which proves to be the least of their worries after facing a psycho girl trying to kill them, an infamous killer threatening to kill them, and Dreux being aple to make it to her job interview. All in 24 hours.

Dreux is represented as the brains of the group, a hard working waitress trying to get a promotion. Alyssa is fun. She is a free spirited artist, but she spends all her time and energy on her situationship Keshawn, played by Josuhua David Neal.

The plot of One of Them Days is predictable, but that’s one of the most important characteristics of a comedy movie. Being predictable gives the viewer comfort in knowing what will happen next, so they can sit back and enjoy the humor without being on the edge of their seat.

Palmer and SZA have undeniable chemistry in the film, and SZA leaves no doubt that her acting career will succeed beyond expectations. It’s evident she was made for acting, and her personality was a major contribution to the success of the film. The two are a dynamic duo who are just overall likable characters that will leave viewers smiling while walking out of the theaters.

Keke Palmer is without a doubt the heart of the movie. She delivers a performance that is equal parts hilarious along with relatable as she brings a perfect balance of sass and sincerity to her character. She contributes to the film’s emotional depth, highlighting the phenomenal work of Syreeta Singleton, the writer of the film. Singleton worked with Lawrence Lamot, the director, to weave together humor into serious topics and allow viewers to find humor in the absurdities of everyday life.

What truly sets One of Them Days apart from every other comedy is the deeper message. The film’s conflict is relatable to many viewers- the feeling of living paycheck to paycheck and feeling like everything is going wrong. It’s impossible for the audience to not be drawn into the friendship of Drew and Alyssa, and the way they portray the conflict of both adulthood and friendships.

The film hit $11.6 million dollars in it’s opening weekend, which is an amazing achievement for a film led by two Black Women. This film offers a refreshing and honest take on adulthood and friendship, making it easily one of the most standout films in the comedy drama. With outstanding performances, a flawless script, and a blend of humor and heart, this film is a must watch.

Released on Jan 17, “One of Them Days” is rated R and can be viewed exclusively in theaters. For more information, visit oneofthemdays.move
