As a result of a new scheduling policy, the first two days before finals are now minimum days. The newly implemented minimum days allot more time for students to study for their finals, giving them better control of their schedules and allowing them to better prepare for their exams.

Ed Council, a committee of selected administrators, created a wellness document which entails improvements that will ideally reduce student workload, including a new homework policy. Despite its positive intentions to reduce stress for students, this new policy has flaws that cause students to be less prepared for the future. […]
Several teachers have decided to have a midterm or final make-up a missed test grade, this avoids the issue that a student who misses the test day is given an unfair advantage on the test because they had an ample amount of time to study and prepare for the test.

It is not often that students will find football players cheering on the track team, or the drama kids supporting the basketball team. In order to conquer the disparities between sports teams and extracurricular activities, Vice Principal Jon Shaw has created, “Team Costa,” a Mira Costa initiative that is bringing Costa’s students closer together and creating a more unified school, positively impacting Costa’s student body. Following Costa’s two-day closure spurred by threats posted on Yik Yak, a social media application, drastic measures were taken to increase the level of security on campus. The new and improved safety measures enforced the inspection of students backpacks before impending onto campus and on regulations put on students leaving the campus, which created a safer environment. However, now these measures are executed less rigorously, which is putting students and staff in danger.

The right of students to express themselves through petitions is an integral right of students that is essential in order to create a more effective and balanced learning environment. […]
