Mira Costa Model United Nations members competed at the UC Davis MUN High School Conference from May 18-20 at the University of California, Davis and continued planning for the 2012-13 school year.
Forty-five Costa freshmen, sophomores and juniors were invited to compete at this intermediate travel conference. Mira Costa received five gavels, or Best Delegate awards; four Outstanding awards; nine Commendation awards and eight Research awards at the conference.
“It was fantastic to have [junior] Jack [Rosenberg] as a partner to work with and help put me through my paces,” double delegate security council junior Monique Rohrbach said. “It was rewarding to come out on top of what is traditionally the most competitive committee.”
Preparations for this event began in early April, involving extensive research of assigned topics such as rights of indigenous people and rights of convicted terrorists.
“We had impressive performances by freshmen and solid leadership by juniors,” MUN Co-Advisor Wayne Knutson said. “This conference punctuated an outstanding year for Costa MUN.”
Although Davis is the last conferences of the year, preparations have been made for trips for the 2012-13 school year.
Some of the travel trips include conferences in New York and San Francisco and others at UC Berkeley, University of Pennsylvania and Brown University.
“We have already begun building the Brown team for the next school year,” MUN Co-Advisor Bob Timberlake said. “Like with Davis, students were selected based on high performance, exercises and excellent class work.”
Timberlake and Knutson sent applications to compete at specific conferences early this spring, as preparations are typically a year ahead.
“The bottom line is that we’re there to debate against the very best schools; it’s a way of judging ourselves as a team,” Timberlake said.
