Mira Costa Girls Volleyball participated in the Torrey Pines Volleyball Tournament at Alliant University in San Diego from Friday, Oct. 12 to Saturday, Oct. 13. Coming from a loss against Redondo, Costa lost in the quarterfinals to Torrey Pines and took 5th place overall.

The Mustangs came out strong against Santa Fe Christian High School on Oct. 12 and won that match 2-1. Gaining momentum from their first game, Costa won their second match against Buchanan High School on the same day with a score of 2-1 which placed them in first in their pool.

“We started off Friday’s matches a bit tired from a tough loss from Redondo the night before” coach Lisa Arce-Zimmerman said. “But we had some great contributions from [junior] Sammy Furlan, and [seniors] Gabi Rosenfeld and Gracie Chavers.”

Costa took control of their matches offensively with the help of senior Lexi Millington who had a total of 43 kills that landed her on the All-Tournament team. Along with senior Corie Bain’s 104 assists and sophomore Sammy Furlan’s 34 assists, Costa beat St. Francis High School 2-0.

“Our team was more motivated than ever to go out and play” sophomore Skylar Caputo said. “The Redondo match gave everyone a sense of the level the team is capable of competing at.”

In the quarterfinals, they went up against the number one ranked team in the nation, Torrey Pines, and lost in a two game sweep. Costa moved on to win their last game against Liberty High School 2-1, which earned them in fifth place in the tournament overall.

“I am proud of the way the whole team contributed this weekend to lift up our level of playing and continue to improve our teamwork” Arce-Zimmerman said. “I feel we are continuing to get better each week and I am looking forward to starting the second half of league play.

Costa’s next game will be against Palos Verdes High School on Wednesday Oct.17. Their overall record is now 14-8 as they continue through Bay League.
