At the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Board of Trustees meeting on Dec. 12, the MBUSD Board unanimously elected Ida VanderPoorte as the new MBUSD Board president, replacing Ellen Rosenberg.
Fellow board member Penny Bordokas nominated VanderPoorte. She has previously served the community as Manhattan Beach Education Foundation treasurer, Manhattan Beach Middle School PTA treasurer and Grandview PTA president. She has been a member of the school board for seven years, and she served as president of the school board in 2010.
“I enjoy being on the School Board because it is an opportunity to give back to the community and allows me to work with so many outstanding individuals,” VanderPoorte said.
The Board president serves a one-year term. Members can serve multiple non-consecutive terms as president. Along with regular Board-member assignments, including attending a variety of committees, councils and foundations, the president position has additional responsibilities within the Board.
The Board president’s additional duties are planning the agendas with Superintendent Dr. Michael Matthews, leading the Board meetings, and being the point of contact between the Board and the community.
“I appreciated the opportunity to serve in this capacity and enjoyed the added responsibility of president,” Rosenberg said.
Karen Komatinsky replaced Bordokas as Board vice president, and Bordokas replaced Komatinsky as Board clerk at the same meeting.
“Manhattan Beach is so fortunate to have such excellent administrators, teachers and staff,” VanderPoorte said. “It is wonderful to watch the young people excel in so many different areas.”
