When the CIF playoffs come around, one team goes home and one goes on to the next round.

The Mira Costa girls water polo team could not keep up with the fast pace offense of Arroyo Grande High School losing to them in the quarterfinals 9-4 on Saturday, Feb. 16.

“We had a great season,” coach Reichart said. “We went farther in the playoffs than we have in the last 6 years.”

The first quarter did not go well for the Mustangs. Arroyo Grande drew first blood with a goal. They then took a demanding lead of 3-0 after two more goals. A foul by Costa lead to Arroyo Grande’s fourth goal of the quarter while they shut the Mustangs out.

“We had a tough first quarter,” sophomore Cece Allen said. “We struggled to come back from it for the rest of the game.”

Costa struck first in the second quarter with a goal from senior Sarah Crist. Junior Jordan Rainey followed with another goal for Costa. However, Arroyo Grande managed to score two more goals before the half with a 6-2 lead.

“We just could not compensate for the hole we put ourselves in early in the game,” Reichart said.

A goal from sophomore Kelly Ciery cut Arroyo Grande’s lead in half to start the third quarter. Arroyo Grande scored another goal before freshman Kaylee Brownsberter followed it up with a goal of her own for the Mustangs.

“We played a good 3 quarters,” junior Megan Harger said. “Our poor playing in the first quarter is what really cost us the entire game.”

With the final quarter underway, the Mustangs could not score. Arroyo Grande scored two more times until the match ended 9-4.

“We are all disappointed that we lost,” Rainey said. “As a whole, our season went well. We had great contributions from the underclassmen.”
