The Mira Costa Winterguard, also known as Colorguard, placed seventh out of nine teams for its performance of “Spoon Your Way to Health” at the Intermediate A Winterguard Association of Southern California championship on April 20 at Edison High School.
The Mustangs’ performance was based on an “I Love Lucy” episode titled “Vitameatavegamin,” and the music for their performance included mixed-in audio from the episode.
“I think that our performance went really well,” Winterguard member junior Ryan Kuresa said. “It feels great to reflect on the whole season and see this progress that we have been making.”
Kuresa was also the host of this particular performance, which means he performed a solo during the performance.
“At first I was worried about having a solo because I had to make that certain connection to the audience, but it was something I later enjoyed,” Kuresa said.
For some members of the Winterguard, including senior Katie Patton, this was their last time performing and competing with the rest of their fellow members.
“The experience for me was great since it was my last competition,” Patton said. “It was kind of a bittersweet moment because I was glad it was over but sad that I would never do it again at all.”
Now that the Winterguard season is over, the team is preparing for its annual end-of-the-year show, which will be on June 10. This show will give the Winterguard the opportunity to show what it has learned throughout the season and perform “Spoon Your Way to Health” for the last time.
“We proved we could write and choreograph an entire show,” co-captain junior Chelsea Williams said. “It was great because it really showed us just how much we progressed.”
