Since the age of five, sophomore Skylar Caputo has been passionate about volleyball.
Her hard work and love for the sport has landed her an athletic scholarship at Pepperdine University for beach volleyball.
“I am very thrilled to be able to play beach volleyball at Pepperdine in two years,” Caputo said. “Playing volleyball has been my passion every since I began playing with my dad.”
Caputo is part of the USA Youth National Indoor Volleyball team and recently made the elite eight for the U-19 USA Beach Volleyball team with a possibility of traveling to Portugal to represent the United States.
“I’m proud of how far she has come,” Caputo’s mother, Lisa Caputo, said. “She motivates herself on and off the court. She is also a reliable teammate with great sportsmanship.”
Caputo currently plays in Interscholastic High School Beach Volleyball Tournaments for Costa’s beach team. Caputo won the High School Beach Volleyball Pairs Tournament in May.
“Skylar and I have been able to learn from each other’s playing styles, making us more well-rounded players,” junior Lan Nguyen said. “She deserves this opportunity more than anyone ,and I could not be more proud.”
Caputo has traveled to Italy, Croatia, Wisconsin, Ohio, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Texas and Washington for volleyball tournaments.
“As a national athlete, I am fortunate enough to travel around the country while playing the sport I love,” Caputo said.
Caputo recently earned the AAA, the highest rating in the California Beach Volleyabll Association. Caputo looks to continue beach volleyball professionally with hopes of representing the U.S. in the 2016 summer Olympics in Rio, Brazil.
“I love playing volleyball, and once I got sucked in, I never looked back,” Caputo said. “I am looking forward to the new experience of playing at Pepperdine.”
