Three Mira Costa Instrumental bands performed a “Popular Concert” on June 7 in the Mira Costa Auditorium at 7 pm.
The musicians played classics like the James Bond theme song. This concert gained its recognition from their surprise song of the year, “Starships”. According to band instructor Joel Carlson, “Starships” was an instant success with the crowd because of how well it was performed. In order to prepare for the concert, the students were known to have worked hard to ready themselves for the pieces they were to play.
“I have always loved the pops tunes and the Mira Costa musicians put on an impressive performance,” Mira Costa parent Lori Fudem said.
Pops music can be subdivided into a variety of categories. It can range from Doo-wop, a stylistic origin of pop, all the way to country. According to freshman Zack Zeoli, he said that one reason why it’s so popular is that, as some students mentioned after the concert, the songs are catchy with repeated melodic choruses.
“I think the performance was so successful because I believe that all the students really understand the heart of the music and music making,” Carlson said. “We strive to make every note as meaningful and perfect as possible to engage the audience as fully as possible, and I was so proud of our students accomplishments in that area last Friday night.”
The pops concert is a fairly new addition to concerts at Mira Costa since the genre is relatively new compared to classical music. The songs have a more current sound that is generally upbeat.
“Pop music is something that will always resonate even as genres evolves. You can hear the different kinds of pop in nearly every kind of modern genre of music,” freshman Sam Sturges said.
