The girls tennis team played a close match against Palos Verdes High School on Tuesday, improving its overall record to 14-2 and 4-1 in Bay League.
In the first round, junior singles player Brooke Swallow defeated Palos Verdes sophomore Megan Fitzpatrick, 6-1. Freshman Amy Gaal played a close match against senior Riley Morgan, winning in a tiebreaker with a score of 7-5, giving the Mustangs a 4-2 lead. Junior Taylor Klein defeated Palos Verdes senior Nicole Scotten, 6-1. After the second round, Costa maintained its 7-5 lead over the Sea Kings.
“Palos Verdes changed their lineup a lot, which messed with us a little bit in the beginning, but we adjusted and pulled through with another solid victory of the year,” Klein said.
Doubles team seniors Claudia Fellows and Sydney Ascher had a close win against the Sea Kings, winning a tiebreaker, 7-6. Freshmen twins Katarina and Isabella Draskovic won all three of their matches, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-2. Senior Paula Cenusa and junior Mai Nojima also had three consecutive victories, including a close win in a tie breaker in the third round.
“The doubles win by Paula Cenusa and Mai Nojima in the last round was impressive because Paula and Mai were trailing the whole set and, at the time, it looked as if the set was going to be the deciding match,” tennis coach Joe Ciasulli said.
The Mustangs’ next match is on Tuesday against West Torrance. The team has three matches remaining before the start of the post-season California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) matches.
“Costa is an excellent position for a strong post-season run, and if it defeats West and Redondo, Costa will finish second in Bay League and maintain its number- 5 ranking in Division I of CIF,” Ciasulli said.
