Costa’s marching band followed its first- place win at the Baldwin Park High School Field Tournament on Oct. 19 with another first-place finish on Nov. 2 at the Sierra Vista High School competition.
At the Baldwin Park competition, the marching band received first place in the categories of Band and Colorguard, and placed third in Percussion, scoring 82.3, 80.5 and 68.0, respectively.
“This competition was more difficult than others because it was incredibly hot out there on the field when we were marching,” freshman band member Matthew Kennedy said. “However, we still did really well and scored really high.”
This is the earliest in its season that the Mira Costa marching band has ever received a score above 80.
“We set a very high standard with our latest performances,” marching band Director Joel Carlson said. “We are trying to go above and beyond at our upcoming tournaments this season.”
At the Sierra Vista competition, Costa placed first in all three categories, earning it first place in its division and second overall. They also received the Music and Visual Sweepstakes awards. The team trumped years past with an overall score of 83.8, its highest score at this competition in the marching band’s history.
“The students placed well in the competition, and they also marched very well,” Carlson said. “In the future, marching band will work to spice up their performances even more.”
