Volleyball wears pink to fight cancer

In honor of national Breast Cancer Awareness Month every October, the Mira Costa girls volleyball program hosted a fundraiser on Oct.17 at Redondo Union to raise awareness and funds for the cause.

The team began holding the fund raiser six years ago when coach Lisa Arce-Zimmerman’s mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Nancy Mason, who was the assistant coach at the time, organized a “pink night” that raised over $10,000 for the cause.

“I am so proud of the fundraising efforts I see each year from my teams and their families,” Zimmerman said. “Breast cancer hit my family hard, so it’s important to me to have the support.”

Players from the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams participate in the annual fundraiser by selling raffle tickets and wearing pink at all the matches. All of the proceeds benefit charities that support the fight against breast cancer.

“I love the fact that we’re able to come together to support a special cause and play what we love,” senior captain setter Sammy Furlan said.

Each season, the money that the teams raise is donated to a different organization. This year, the Mustangs donated over $6,000 to the Dr. Susan Love Foundation located in Santa Monica.

“I love that we’ve been able to come together through this tradition,” senior libero Brooke Feld said.
