Boys water polo defeated South Pasadena High School, with a score of 7-3, in their second round of California Interscholastic Federation playoffs on Nov. 16.
The game started off with a goal by Costa senior perimeter Gabe Smith and then a block by junior goalie Nicholas Dale. This was followed with a goal by senior perimeter Corey Erickson and another save by Dale. The first period ended with a goal by Pasadena, making the score 2-1.
The second period began with 3 shots by Costa and a save by Dale. Then, junior perimeter Edward Jeon scored a goal off of an assist from senior perimeter Drew Rogerson. Dale blocked 2 Pasadena attempts and sophomore Jake Miller-Tolt took 2 shots that passed right next to the goal posts. Senior whole set Austin Norris scored Costa’s fourth goal off of an assist from Smith. Norris scored once more on a breakaway. The score at the end of the first half was 5-1.
Rogerson scored Costa’s sixth goal in the beginning of the third period. Then, Norris scored off of an assist from junior perimeter Brandon Lavinsky. Dale had 2 more saves and the period ended with a shot by Erickson.
The fourth period commenced with a shot by junior perimeter Andrew Todd that bounced off the Pasadena goalie’s shoulder and then hit the post. Junior goalie Dylan Koester blocked 4 shots and then Lavinsky scored Costa’s final goal. The game ended with 2 more goals by the Tigers, but the Mustangs came out victorious with a final score of 7-1.
“We are incredibly lucky to have a deep bench,” senior team captain said. “Any time someone is having an off game we have a player who steps up. That depth makes for incredible teamwork and defensively I think we put on a clinic.”
The boys will play in the CIF semi-finals on Wednesday.
