Mira Costa High School held its biannual University of California Los Angeles blood drive on Nov. 5 in the Fisher gym.
About 300 students signed up to donate blood throughout the day. The UCLA medical center collected a total of 147 pints of blood.
“Our goal was to receive 150 units, and we were just shy of that number” ASB Activities Director Lisa Claypoole said. “But in order to even get 120 people to donate correctly, we have to sign up 180 people because a lot of them get deferred.”
To give blood, students must meet a list of requirements. Some of these requirements include being at least 16 years old, weighing a minimum of 110 pounds, and having no history of hepatitis.
“The donors must go through interviews and make sure they’re allowed to donate blood,” UCLA Supervisor Noelle Lai said. “Also a small sample of their blood is taken to make sure they have enough iron.”
