The Mira Costa Drama Department held auditions for the spring musical, “Peter Pan,” on Jan. 13-15 in preparation for the plays opening night on April 25 in the Costa auditorium.
The musical is based on the story of a boy named Peter Pan, who brings a group of kids to Neverland to fight against Captain Hook and his gang of pirates. Juniors Ryan Fiene and Julia McDermott will star as John and Peter Pan, respectively, while seniors Sabrina Mongiello and Matt Sena will play Wendy and Mr. Darling, respectively.
“We are very excited to be performing ‘Peter Pan,’” drama instructor Carol Matthews said. “We wanted to perform a show that we felt the whole community could enjoy. By doing such a well-known play, we feel that a lot of people will come.”
For the show, there will be 15 hours added to the usual tech week to prepare for the flying aspects of the performances.
“These shows take a lot of dedication from the performers,” drama member senior Estefania Freire said. “We have to put in a lot of time and effort to produce the same quality show that people have grown to expect from us. It is tough, but the ability to work with such an experienced group and perform such a heartwarming show for the community makes it all worth it.”
According to Matthews, the department’s recent success at Fullerton for “Your a Good Man, Charlie Brown” and “Anything Goes” has created very high expectations for all of their performances.
“We have been firing on all cylinders recently,” Matthews said. “A lot of our talented actors are returning and will be participating in this performance.”
The musical will be showing in the Costa auditorium April 25, 26, and 30 and May 1-3. Adult ticket prices are $15 for pre-sale and $18 at the door. Student prices are $12.
“With all of the combined experience we have as a cast, I feel this could be one of our best performances yet,” Freire said.
