At the Manhattan Beach Unified School District meeting on Feb. 5, board members approved the proposal to provide window coverings on the exterior windows of the new math and science building at Mira Costa High School.
The math and science building opened to students and staff this school year with new technology. Due to the glare caused by the excess amount of sunlight, some technology has been unable to be used, such as smartboards. The faculty plans to install blinds in one classroom to test out their effectiveness.
“We are confident the blinds will do what we expect, but we want to be sure before we commit to buying them for the rest of the classrooms,” Deputy Superintendent Dr. Rick Bagley said.
The blinds will cost an estimated price of $44,617.
“Of course budget is always a concern, but, if there is something that is distracting the students from learning, of course we are going to fix it,” Principal Dr. Ben Dale said.
The faculty hopes that these blinds will solve their problems and that it will provide an easier teaching environment for students.
“I am excited to hear that they agreed to allow us get blinds,” science teacher Pamela Manago said. “I spent a lot of time putting together power points for students to see, and all the work I put in became useless. This new building is here so that the students can use it. But due to the glare, they are unable to do so,”
If blinds are successfully installed in the first classroom, MBUSD hopes to have blinds installed throughout the building over the course of the next month.
“The building is designed for light,” Principal Dr. Ben Dale said. “I feel that light coming in through all sides of the building is beautiful, but once it disrupts a classroom, it is our job to do whatever we can to make the learning environment better,”
