The Mira Costa swim team competed against Palos Verdes High School away on Tuesday.
Senior Gigi Franco, freshman Shannon O’Brien and sophomores Annika Gilbroy and Sidney Hong, placed first in the 200-medley relay with an overall time of 2:00.03. O’Brien also took first in the 200-freestyle at 2:05.55, with junior Katie Shalvarjian right behind her to take second. Barnhill took first in the 200-IM at 2:18.55 and the 100-backstroke at 1:00.91, with O’Brien right behind her at 1:02.08. Gilbroy also took first for the girls in the 100-fly with a time of 1:05.23.
“I think we had good competition to race against, but I think we can improve our times over the next couple of dual meets and prepare for CIF,” Franco said.
For the boys, sophomores Matt Woicik and Ian Campbell placed first in the 200-IM, with times of 1:48.12 and 2:07.41, respectively. Junior Ed Jeon also took first in the 100-backstroke, with a time of 1:01.04. Senior Spencer Adler also won his heat in the 100-fly, at 1:02.26.
The boys were also successful in the 400-medley. Juniors Jacob Baker, Derrick Compas, Charlie Durham and Jack Heagy placed first with an overall time of 3:49.39. The boys also won the 400-freestyle after sophomores Mikey Portis, Campbell, and Woicik, with Jeon finished at 3:27.30, beating PV by about six seconds.
“Overall, I think we did very well,” Jeon said. “Although we were tired and sore, we pulled through.”
After the 42nd event, the girls varsity team ranked 100 and the boys team ranked 91. The team will compete again today against Peninsula High School at home at 3:00 pm..
