In the South Bay Track and Field Championships at West Torrance High School on Saturday, the Costa boys track and field team finished in first, while the girls team took third.

The boys had a commanding score of 79.25, while Peninsula finished second with 64.50. The Costa girls finished with 49.21 behind Redondo with 150.19.

“I thought it was a good level of competition, and the Mustangs did well,” senior Alison Bartak said. “Everyone was competitive.”

The girls gained points when junior Natasha Brunstein came in second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:12. Alexis Johnson placed fourth in the 3,200-meter at 11:18.

Senior Juliana Loiola placed seventh out of 27 competitors in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.69 seconds, and Myan Elrington came in fourteenth out of the 36 runners in the 100-meter dash. Elrington also tied for fifth with North Torrance’s Taylor Dixon in the long jump at 15’3.”

“I didn’t race as well as I wanted to on Saturday because I have a strained ligament,” Loiola said. “But it felt good to be out there racing again.”

In the throwing events, senior Chelsea Tatum placed fifth in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Junior Leora Tofler tied with Emily Tan for fifth in the pole vault at a height of nine feet.

“My performance wasn’t that great, but I am happy with making the top six,” Tatum said.

The Costa boys were able to keep their record up throughout the meet. Senior Niko Pappas came in second in the boys 1,600-meters and was one second behind a Palos Verdes runner. He came in third in the 800-meter run and again was one second away from first.

Senior Robert McMahon placed first in the 110-meter hurdles and senior P. J. Onusconich followed in a close second.

“I was happy with my 110-hurdles race because it was one of my best times of the year,” McMahon said. “But there are still a few things I can clean up and improve on in order to drop my times some more.”

Senior Josh Block came in second in the 400-meter dash, and Matt Wenner tied for third with three other boys from Bishop, North Torrance and Redondo Union in the boys high jump with a height of 5’10.”

The track team had its last home meet against Redondo yesterday; however, the results were unavailble due to the time of publication.
