Most Costa athletes only dream about playing college sports. Freshman Alexa Underwood has pushed herself one step closer to achieving that dream by attending the 2014 Princeton volleyball recruiting camp in August.
The Princeton volleyball recruiting camp is a two day event hosted taking place at Princeton college, where the players will train using the teams facilities. Underwood will fly out by herself and stay in the dorms with the other camp participants. The two days will be followed by an evaluation by the Princeton coaching staff.
“I am eager to teach some of the stuff I learn at camp to my club and high school team,” Underwood said. “I think they will greatly benefit from the professional coaching I’m going to receive.”
Underwood started playing volleyball 5 years ago for Sunshine volleyball club. This year, she played for Costa’s freshman/sophomore team, and was recently recruited to play for varsity during the upcoming season.
“Alexa is a player you can always trust with the ball,” freshman, Maya Porterfield said. “She is a team player who never fails to impress. During practice she motivates our team to perform better and picks us up when we are down.”
Underwood applied to the camp after reading about it, and was soon accepted after she sent in an application. Underwood hopes to follow in her father’s footsteps and attend Princeton.
“I am very proud of my daughter,” her father, Craig Underwood said. “She has earned this opportunity through her hard work and dedication.”
Underwood is extremely dedicated to both her sport, and her academics. She manages three hour practices after school along with homework. She understands that if she wants to go to Princeton, her grades, along with her volleyball skills, must be outstanding.
“Costa has been a great experience for Alexa so far in academics and athletics,” her mother, Susan Underwood said. “Education is our top priority for her and we hope she is able to continue her journey and achieve her dreams while enjoying the experience.”
Underwood hopes to bring another California Interscholastic Federation championship to Costa through her hard work and dedication to volleyball.
“Alexa is about as hard working as it gets,” said freshman teammate, Madison Mcdonald. “She always comes to practice in a positive mood and motivates us all to do better. I have no doubt that Alexa will do big things in volleyball, and her hard work will carry her there. I look forward to playing with Alexa in seasons to come.”
