Flying Lotus’ “You’re Dead!” was released on October 7 and is one of Flying Lotus’ most cohesive projects to date.

Flying Lotus manages to take his unique sound and turn it into an amazing experience through a variety of beats and spectacular feature artists.

Flying Lotus is an electronic beat maker, producer, and occasionally a vocalist from the west coast. He has created two mostly instrumental albums that are considered modern classics within the genre. “You’re Dead!” is his fifth project to date. It is a follow up to one of his less memorable projects “Until the Quiet Comes”. With a large amount of anticipation for this new LP Flying Lotus delivers with an upbeat and well put together project.

The album itself has a 38 minute run time and has several big name features including Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Thundercat, and Flying Lotus’ alter ego Captain Murphy. All the features on this album fit well and add to the overall concept of the album, other than the Snoop Dogg feature which felt unneeded and uninspired.

Every track on Flying Lotus’ “You’re Dead!” feels different and adds a new experience to the listener, but all the tracks contribute to the main theme of the album. Flying Lotus wants to create an experience through the sound and not just let it fall into the background.

The concept that most the features try to reinforce is a trip from life to death. The album has a theme relating to death whether it be fearing death and the darkness surrounding it or embracing it with open arms. Even though every track on “You’re Dead!” has some sort of nod to the theme of death, Flying Lotus manages to completely escape the depression that comes with talking about death by using jazz samples throughout the album.

The jazz influences cause an upbeat tone to this album that is not present in any of Flying Lotus’ other projects. “You’re Dead!”, with its upbeat tone and its atmosphere that Flying Lotus provides through synth creates an ominous vibe to this album that just adds to the listener experience.

“You’re Dead!” is a hard album to describe due to its variety of music throughout the album. It is an upbeat jazz, hip-hop, and electronic fusion that carries the tone of death throughout the album while keeping away the depression that comes with death. Its a breath of fresh air for Flying Lotus fans and one of his best projects to date.

“You’re Dead!” is available for $9.99 digitally and in retail.
