The Mira Costa Girls Tennis faced a tough loss on Wednesday when they lost to Corona Del Mar, with a final score of 13 to 5. This drops their record to 13-2.
Sophomore Amy Gaal led the singles players, taking two out of her three matches with scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
“The first match was pretty competitive but in the second match I was able to make more shots and get the win,” Gaal said.
Senior Taylor Klein managed to win one of her matches against the number two singles player with a score of 6-4 but lost the other two sets 6-2 and 7-5.
“Tt didn’t go as well as I hoped,” Klein said. “Even though we lost, we are doing a lot better than we expected this season.”
Freshman Isabelle Lau fought hard in her first round match, losing 7-5. She lost momentum during the next two rounds, losing 6-2 and 6-1.
“I tried really hard and put my best effort,” Lau said. “Overall I think we have a better team but we didn’t play as well as we could have.”
The two doubles teams of sophomores Isabella and Katarina Draskovic, and sophomore Madi Giese and senior Mai Nojima were only able to win one set each. Sophomores Drew Waller and Jackie Soloman failed to win a set.
“I hope this is an eye opening experience for the girls,” coach Joe Ciasulli said. “This is a very good team and we were not ready for them.”
The Mustangs faced Peninsula on Thursday, however results are unavailable due to time of publication. Next week, they will play Inglewood at home on Tuesday.
“Peninsula is always a great match,” Gaal said. “It’s fun and advantageous to play people who are better than us. Inglewood will be an interesting match because they are new to our league this year.”
