After the release of the first two movies in the “Hunger Games” trilogy, it seemed nearly impossible for a film to exceed the precedent the previous films had set for the series. “Mockingjay Part 1” has done the impossible.
Directed by Francis Lawrence, “Mockingjay” showcases all of the greatest aspects of the novel “Mockingjay,” by Suzanne Collins, with intense emotions, a dark atmosphere and a powerful protagonist. In addition, the movie improves upon the book by removing plot holes and increasing action. The actors also make the film become more of a reality through displaying genuine feelings and reactions to the gruesome events throughout the film.
The film deals with the revolution that occurs in Panem, a futuristic, dystopian nation. There are 12 districts in the country, some of which are in rebellion against the Capitol, which abuses its citizens’ rights by forcing them to participate in the Hunger Games.
The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), is rescued from the 75th Quarter Quell Hunger Games by the president of District 13, President Alma Coin (Julianne Moore), and Plutarch Heavensbee (Philip Seymour Hoffman). District 13 is an underground district unknown to the Capitol that is heading the rebellion. Katniss joins the rebels of District 13 as the Mockingjay, a symbol of the rebellion.
One of the highlights of the film is the eerie atmosphere that Francis Lawrence establishes. The constant gruesome action that the Capitol takes against rebellions in other districts creates this tone. For example, during an uprising in District 8, the Capitol purposefully bombs a hospital full of innocent civilians.
Furthermore, Katniss proves to play a vital part in the film. This stems from her role as the Mockingjay, the leader of the districts’ rebellion. Although she is not as involved in the action as in the previous movies, she is actually more involved in the nuances of the plot because her character causes many of the plot twists throughout the film.
The major selling point of the film is the genuine and evident chemistry between the various characters. For example, the friendship that Jennifer Lawrence and Hemsworth’s characters share hints at events that happened before the start of the movie, displaying their individual histories, such as Katniss’ struggles in the Hunger Games and Gale’s deep affection for Katniss’ family. This helps to make the characters more convincing.
Finally, the film’s deviations from the plot of the book surprisingly make the film more captivating by eliminating confusing plot holes and adding thrilling action to the plotline.
All in all, this film uses the best aspects of the book while also incorporating changes that make the film more engaging. In addition, the convincing cast members convey authentic emotions, which makes “Mockingjay” an overall success.
“Mockingjay Part 1” is rated PG-13 and is now playing in theaters nationwide.
