The Mira Costa Model United Nations program recently hosted and participated in the Los Angeles Invitational MUN conference on Saturday and Sunday and selected 15 members to travel to Paris and participate on Dec. 5-7 in Paris MUN.
Freshman, sophomore and junior MUN students debated in LAIMUN, and 10th, 11th and 12th-grade students helped run the conference. Student committee chairs evaluated their peers and awarded participants with Commendations, Outstandings and Best delegates.
“At LAIMUN, we measured our success based on how smoothly our secretariat handled problems that arose, how knowledgeable and professional our chairs were, and how we provided opportunities for the delegates’ debate experience,” Costa Secretary-General Eva Abramson said.
In addition to MUN’s work at LAIMUN, MUN members Eden Erickson and Jordan Cohn received Best Delegate awards for their work at PAMUN.
“The fact that we were thrown into a foreign-style of debate and still succeed to some degree was a real testament to our abilities as a school,” junior Maddy Angstreich said.
Costa MUN was one of two high schools from the United States invited to debate at the PAMUN conference.
“Part of the reason why certain students were chosen to attend Paris was because of how flexible they were in dealing with an entirely different conference structure,” MUN adviser Wayne Knutson said.
The program is currently at the 18th annual Regional High School Model United Nations conference at the Hilton in San Francisco that ends tomorrow. At RHSMUN, awards are not given to individuals but to schools as a whole.
“Our group is always very strong, and we are going to see if we can be the top school this year,” MUN adviser Bob Timberlake said. “This year we are seeing if we can be the top school without a doubt.”
