The Mira Costa Drama Department has begun practicing for its spring musical, “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” which will open on April 24 in the Costa auditorium.
“Thoroughly Modern Millie” tells the story of a small town girl, Millie Dillmount, played by Costa senior Julia McDermott, who goes to New York to marry for money instead of love. According to drama teacher Carol Mathews, the department chose this play due to the large number of female actors in its department.
“Thoroughly Modern Millie” has been done a number of times throughout the South Bay, and I think it will come out to be a fun show for us,” Mathews said.
Cameron Boyer, Calyssa Frankel, James Olivas, Hadley Thomas, Derek Zeoli, and Zack Zeoli will play the lead roles of Jimmy, Miss Dorothy Brown, Trevor, Millie Billmount and Mrs. Meers, Bun Foo, and Ching Ho, respectively, in the production.
“It is bittersweet that this is my last Costa drama production, and I hope to go out with a bang,” McDermott said. “I have grown up in this department, it has been my home for the past four years and every show has been filled with wonderful laughter and memories that have a special place in my heart.”
Thoroughly Modern Mille consists of musical numbers including fast-tempo tap and jazz routines.
“As dance captain, I have to learn all the choreography for the show regardless if I’m in the number or not,” senior Ryan Fiene said. “Then I help clean up the number after the choreographers teach it. At the moment, only girls are tap dancing, but I could possibly be tapping in the show.”
The cast began rehersals on Jan. 20 and will continue rehearsing until the end of April when the show opens. These practices last several hours, starting after school.
“This is my first Mira Costa show, and I am lucky enough to be a part of the production,“ sophomore Cara Christian said. “We started practices last week, and it is already so much fun being a part of this cast.”
