Common Core preparation continues

Last year after Costa juniors participated in a trial run of the new Common Core Standards test in April, current juniors will officially take the Common Core test in late May after Advanced Placement testing.

Last year, Costa administered the tests on computers in the library and classrooms, allowing the administration to expose technological problems such as failing computers or systems crashing in preparation for this years’ testing.

“The biggest challenge we had last year was to get the computers working and to sort out testing times, but we managed to do it all,” Costa Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter said.

The Common Core testing plays a factor in Mira Costa’s Application Program Interface score. California will release a new formula based on Common Core testing to calculate school API scores sometime in the 2015-16 school year. Mira Costa did not have an API score for the 2013-14 school year due to the trial run of last year’s Common Core testing but will receive a recalculated score in the spring of 2016.

“I’m confident that students will shine just because we always have,” Costa Vice Principal Ian Drummond said. “If we are all operating on the same playing field, then I will assume that our school and students will perform just as well as we always have, if not better.”
