Saul Goodman goes from saving drug dealers in “Breaking Bad” back six years to his unsuccessful legal career as James McGill, where even teenagers attempt to take advantage of him.
Created by Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, “Better Call Saul” is an entertaining and mind boggling series. Although “Breaking Bad” is practically impossible to follow up, with its interesting plot and talented actors, the show does not fail to please its viewers.
Preceding the fan favorite television series “Breaking Bad”, this show takes Saul Goodman back in time to his boring life as James McGill (Bob Odenkirk). Before the making of drugs, James was a very unsuccessful lawyer. After many failures, its only by accident that he begins his stumble toward the dark side, after a random encounter with two neanderthals who try ripping him off which triggers both a scheme of his own and a dizzying assortment of unlimited consequences.
Best known as a comic actor, Odenkirk is the perfect actor to bring added dimension to his character. Even though it is asking a lot out of him to practically build every scene around him, due to minimal supporting actors, his failure to succeed brings laughter to the viewers and keeps them hooked.
Two actors who are going to play a larger role in this series, are Michael Mckean, who plays James’s older brother and was once a very successful lawyer, and Jonathan Banks, who had a large role in “Breaking Bad”, who with his gravely voice and menacing manner, makes viewers realize he will have a big part in this show.
In all fairness it is highly unlikely this series will ever be as good as “Breaking Bad”, so far this show has a lighter and more humorous tone than “Breaking Bad”. With huge expectations, this series starts of with a bang and keeps viewers wanting more hoping to reach the heights of “Breaking Bad”.
McGill is always trying to find ways to make money and sometimes slips into illegal activities. These activities cause suspense as well as humor making the show a thrill ride to watch and leaves the audience wanting to see the next episode.
This show has a very high mark to hit but so far “Better Call Saul” is outstanding and pleasing to any viewer. With very talented actors and a hilarious and interesting plot, this show has the potential to be a new fan favorite.
“Better Call Saul” is on every Monday night at 10 on AMC and is rated TV-MA.
