Beach volleyball continues streak

Girls beach volleyball won both of its games in Santa Monica on April 11. The girls beat West Torrance, 2-0, and Redondo by forfeit. These games helped the team keep its undefeated streak of 30 games.
Senior Keala Rusher and freshman Pippa Monk defeated West Torrance, 21-13 and 21-11. Rusher and Monk’s constant dives and consistent serves kept the ball in play during both sets. Their offense suppressed West Torrance’s aggression, making it easy for Costa to stay in the lead.
“Pippa and I played cohesively,” Rusher said. “We complement each other’s ability really well, and both of us are level-headed players, which makes it really fun to play with her.”
Junior Avery Hazelrigg and sophomore Emma Smith dominated West Torrance, 21-7 and 21-4. Smith and Hazelrigg’s solid passes and successful communication were key to their win. In addition, their defensive plays helped them keep the ball in the air until they had an opportunity to spike it onto the opposing team’s court.
“We served really tough and had a ton of ball control,” Smith said.
The girls play Saturday against Palos Verdes at 9 a.m. and South Torrance at 11 a.m. at Dockweiler.
“It’s a bummer that we didn’t get to play Redondo, and it doesn’t feel as good to win with a forfeit,” said Hazelrigg. “But winning is winning, and our sand team is determined not to lose one game this whole year.”
