On Friday, Costa was eliminated from California Interscholastic Federation competition with a loss to San Marino High School. The Mustangs went 1-1 overall in CIF and were eliminated in the second round of competition.
In their first CIF game of the season, the Mustangs defeated the Santa Monica Vikings 15-3. The game took place at Costa on Wednesday, May 13. Costa played very well in this match and looked promising going into the second round.
The Mustangs dominated throughout the match only losing one singles game and two doubles games. Junior Alex Gaal won all three of his games in singles and Juniors Blake and Tanner Suard also won all three in doubles.
“I feel like we came out and got done what needed to be done,” Tanner Suard said, “It definitely wasn’t the best tennis we’ve played, but we all pulled through in the end.”
On Friday, the Mira Costa Mustangs took on San Marino in Costa’s second CIF match of the season. Costa, 1-0 in CIF, was defeated by San Marino to bring an end to its season.
Junior Alex Gaal was able to win two of his singles matches with scores of 6-4 and 6-5 against very tough opponents. Juniors Blake and Tanner Suard were also able to win two of their doubles matches. No other Costa players managed to win any of their games.
“They were a really good team and they played a lot better than we did today,” Tanner Suard said, “I think if we played them again, the game would be much closer than it was today but they still deserve a lot of credit.”
This brings an end to Costa’s tennis season. Overall, the Mustangs went 12-4 with a 7-1 Bay League record. This was good enough to go second in Bay League behind Palos Verdes. Some of Costa’s players will go on to compete in state singles and doubles competition.
“I think we all believe that a second round loss in CIF is pretty disappointing,” Gaal said, “Hopefully we perform much better next year and our players do well in state.”
