In Hobson’s “Maggie,” a zombie’s life is more important than another human’s life.

Director Henry Hobson crafts a small, gloomy film with a slow pace, a unique setting and an interesting atmosphere that manages to surprise and satisfy at the same time.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world where zombies exist, “Maggie” is a film about one father’s journey to protect his daughter. When Wade (Arnold Schwarzenegger) learns about his daughter Maggie’s (Abigail Breslin) infection he will stop at nothing to save her.

Schwarzenegger rises to the challenge as the lead role in this film. It is clear to how committed he is to his role because of all the emotion he puts into his character.

Hobson crates suspenseful scenes that entertain throughout the film. Wade’s constant fights against the flesh-eating zombies are all alarming as the zombies appear around every corner. “Maggie” contains many of these surprising scenes that make the film eerie yet amusing.

The dark and rural post-apocalyptic atmosphere helps create a tense feeling. The setting of a cabin in the middle of a gloomy forest creates and apprehensive feeling in this film. Hobson uses the setting to portray a zombie-infested world that scares throughout the whole film.

A major theme of this film is one father’s commitment to his physically ill daughter. This genre is appealing because it takes a scary approach to a love story.

The pacing is fairly slow as it takes a while to introduce and develop the characters. The early zombie fighting scenes are enough to satisfy until the main conflict arises.

Hobson’s attempt of a small thriller with a deep message proves to be successful. He transforms this love story into a horror with the right setting, atmosphere, and a slow, but sure pace.

“Maggie” is rated PG-13 and is currently playing in select theaters or available for rent on “Amazon” or “Google Play”.
