On May 7, Girls lacrosse fell to the Redondo Seahawks in an away game. The Mustangs lost by a score of 11-5, ending their run in California Interscholastic Federation play.
The Mustangs were down, 3-0, within the first 10 minutes of the game. As the half continued, they adjusted their defense and were able to stop more of the Seahawks’ fast-paced attacks. Costa was unable to create any scoring opportunities, and the half ended with a score of 5-0.
“The defense did a great job playing aggressively and consistently,” senior goalkeeper Aliya Carpenter said.
The Mustangs did not pass with accuracy in the second half, and Redondo had possesion for most of the half.
“We were unable to get control of the ball, and we couldn’t gain enough momentum,” junior center Kayla Sugimoto said. “This caused us to come out flat and be scoreless in the first half.”
Costa began successfully transitioning the ball up the field to the offense in the second half. With good ball distribution primarly from Sugimoto, they managed to score five goals, causing the the game to end with a final score of 11-5.
“As a whole, we really stepped up to the challenge and stayed strong against Redondo’s attacks,” sophomore defender Kay Schickler said.
Girls lacrosse’s Bay League record was 8-7-0, and its overall record was 11-9-1.
“We battled hard and really came together as a team” coach Amanda Cross said. “I’m so proud of what we accomplished as a team.”
