Mira Costa High School’s track was renovated over the past three weeks to help prevent the injuries the track surface caused to runners. The grand opening took place on August 19 at Waller Stadium.

Mira Costa’s 13-year-old track was renovated by Beyon Sports Surfaces with funds from MB/X, Club Ed, and The Manhattan Beach 10k Committee. The grand opening was attended by the marching band, the football team, the cheer team, the cross country team, the administration and many other community members.

“I’m really thankful for the support from MB/X and the track team’s fundraising success at the Mustang Mini Meet and our High School Invitational Mustang Relays,” junior cross country member Scott Healy said.

Costa’s very own cross country team made the debut lap on the newly refinished track. During the event, speeches were given by the Manhattan Beach Unified School District Superintendent Michael Matthews and MB/X Executive Director Jennifer Williams.

“It was awesome to see all of the people attending the ceremony, and there was a really great atmosphere,” Healy said. “ I look forward to running on the new track, and I hope to see new records made during this year’s season.”

According to Williams, the old track was resurfaced because it was less shock absorbent and worn down, which caused shin splints and other injuries among those who used the track frequently. The new surface not only improves the track visually, but it is safer for those who use it, according to junior cross country runner Andrew Costley.

“MB/X is pleased to support Mira Costa with projects like this,” Williams said. “We are excited to see so many members of the community and athletic teams show up to support the opening of the beautiful new track.”
