Troye Sivan defies all previous skepticism of being able to break out of YouTube with new EP “Wild.” He released his second EP on Friday, September 4th. The singer incorporates aspects of pop and electronic music, while showcasing his vocal and lyrical maturity in this six track EP. Although he utilizes some of the same sounds from his previous EP, “Trxye,” he successfully incorporates new styles and guest singers.

With 3.5 million subscribers on YouTube, Troye Sivan has created an extremely large online following. Many people were very skeptical when it came to his second EP, since the transition from making videos to producing music is a difficult one that many haven’t been able to make successfully.

However, it is very clear that Troye Sivan’s second EP will not be a “sophomore slump.” The singer’s hard work is clearly shown throughout all of the songs. His transition from being primarily a YouTuber to becoming known as a respected singer has been rapid, yet extremely successful.

All of the songs have a separate theme that when put together creates an intertwined story about trying to get back to the basics. However, the listener might find that, at times, the songs can get repetitive since many of them have the same general sound.

In several of the songs on the EP, Troye Sivan brings in other singers, such as Broods and Tkay Maidza, to create an impressive dynamic range of vocal talent. The various artists help make amazing harmonies that create the striking illusion of multiple layered levels in the songs.

The use of electronic music blended with pop shines through in the song “The Quiet”. With many builds and drops, this song most clearly showcases the electro pop style of music Troye Sivan has historically used, but with a new twist.

Sivan’s most popular song “Wild” is clearly the centerpiece of the EP. The song showcases his vocal, lyrical, and instrumental talent. With a cheerful sound and rhythm it is by far the most upbeat song, yet it can get repetitive after a couple listens.

The song “Fools” starts off slowly, but then builds up over time. Within the lyrics the listener can recognize the different emotions Sivan feels, including anger, sadness, or resentfulness. This song is based off of a breakup or bad relationship, with the repeating lines of “only fools fall for you.” The song sets itself apart by having its own individual sound that is more dependant on electronic music rather than pop.

“Ease (ft. Broods)” is by far the most brilliant song on the whole EP. From the instrumentals to the harmonies, everything blends together perfectly to generate the story it is trying to tell. Brood’s high voice blends incredibly with Troye’s lower pitch, creating a perfect harmony, while still giving both singers time to bring a spotlight to their individual singing talents.

Troye Sivan’s blend of different genres is bound make this EP extremely successful. Unlike most EPs or albums that come out there tends to be one or two weaker songs, but on this EP, all songs excell previous expectations.

“Wild” came out on September 4th and is available digitally and in retail for $4.74-$5.98.
