Mira Costa held its fourth-annual Distinguished Alumni and Hall of Fame ceremony in the Auditorium on Wednesday to honor former students for their post-graduation accomplishments.
This year’s ceremony inducted five alumni for their various achievements ranging from military service to humanitarian work. In past years, Costa has honored a wide variety of alumni; however, administration has recently consolidated the number of inductees.
“There is no set number as to how many people can be nominated or selected,” Principal Dr. Ben Dale’s secretary, Heather Hoffman, said. “Our first year we had 17 inductees. In recent years, we’ve had smaller classes, mostly so that we could showcase everyone in both assemblies.”
During the assemblies, the nominees recounted their experiences at Costa and how they have shaped their careers. According to Hoffman, it provided an example to students of real-life success stories from students that have walked the same halls in years past.
“Hopefully, it helps students visualize success after high school. One can be ‘famous’ while in high school, but it really only matters what you do afterward,” 1981 Costa graduate and 2015 inductee Milo Aukerman said. “So, if the ceremony can inspire some graduating students to launch their adult lives in a successful way, it has served its purpose.”
