Mira Costa’s boys water polo team competed in the South Bay Tournament on Friday and Saturday at home. They were crowned champions after beating Oaks Christian 9-3, El segundo 20-5, and Crescenta Valley 14-4. They also defeated Palisades and Hoover.
The top performer was junior attacker Christian Thornton, who scored 25 goals total throughout the tournament. This pushes Thornton’s season goal total well over 35, putting him alongside senior attacker Jake Tolt for highest team scorers.
“I think I was able to play well because our team really started to click during the tournament,” Thornton said. “This led to a lot more opportunities to score.”
Costa’s overall record is 14-4, and 4-0 in Bay League, and will face Peninsula High School this Tuesday in an away game at 3 p.m. According to junior attacker Mark Warneke, the tournament was a great way to stay sharp for league and get better as a team.
“The tournament was a fun way for us to get better and help us be at our best during our league games,” Warneke said.
