The Manhattan Beach Police Department has been conducting an investigation of the Costa campus after the main office secretary received a bomb threat today from an anonymous caller, which resulted in the evacuation of all Costa students, Executive Director of Educational Services Carolyn Seaton said.

Mira Costa Vice Principal Deborah Hofreiter stated that when the anonymous person called the Costa main office secretary this morning, he or she stated twice that a bomb was located in a classroom on campus. When the secretary asked the caller a question, he or she immediately hung up the phone.

According to Seaton, MBPD plans to use information from the call to trace any possible sources for the threat.

“We did disclose, in cooperation with the police, who our phone carrier is to potentially trace that call and follow the lead that way,” Seaton said.

In addition to tracing the call, MBPD, along with other police departments, is conducting an investigation on campus, searching through each room, office and building individually using several teams of bomb-sniffing dogs. The investigation is scheduled to take a minimum of four to five hours. According to Seaton, they have not found any devices and have not yet disclosed any possible leads.

“Right now, there has been incredible interagency cooperation,” Seaton said.

MBPD, led by Chief Eve Irvine, are continuing their search process throughout the afternoon.

“All things are going according to plan but we haven’t received any information yet,” Seaton said. “We are just waiting to hear more information from the police department. We anticipate nothing, but Dr. Matthews will communicate with the entire MBUSD community once the police conclude their search.”
