La Purisima, one of the 100 best public golf courses in the country, set the stage for the two Costa golfers as they laid their tees down for the CIF Individual Masters on May 24 .
Sophomores David Kim and Ryann Ree played in the meet against the best high school golfers in the South Bay. Ree shot a 75, while Kim shot an 85. Only Ree qualified to move on to the next CIF match on June 3.
“Ryann’s a solid player. Hopefully, he can move on to state,” Kim said.
Previously, Costa competed in the CIF Division Team Finals, smashing Los Alamitos and South Torrance to win the team championship. Most of the golfers had great performances.
With a score of only 369 shots, Costa was the clear winner. Los Alimatos was the runner up, shooting 380 strokes, and South came in last with 384 strokes.
“Winning feels good. In the beginning we struggled as a team since we fought with ourselves. But in the end, we came together and won,” sophomore Michael D’Angelo said.
The finals were held at Redhawk golf course in Temecula on May 10. The best players were senior Kyle Nakazaki and D’Angelo, who shot two under par and one under par, respectively.
“Last year I shot 78 strokes, which is six above par, so shooting one under par was a big improvement. It was cool to shoot under par with Kyle,” D’Angelo said.
Coach Robert Timberlake believes the season this year was successful and taught the boys many things.
“I see this all as an accumulation of what our program wanted to do and tried to implement starting back in 1998. Set realistic expectations, build on them, build a team, play top venues and opponents. A young man learns more from his defeats than his victories; young boys do not. The lessons this year go deep,” Timberlake said
Next year, only one senior will be leaving the team, and the team is expected to only get better.
“Next year’s team should be smarter, better and go farther. The team could be one of our best ever,” Timberlake said.
